The lesson was about the Big6 which is a process model that integrates information search and use skills along with technology tools in a systematic process to find, use, apply, and evaluate information for specific needs and tasks. It was also explained that students may use these steps to help them focus and stay organised during the research process as follows:
Stage 1. Task Definition
• Define the information problem and identify the information needed
o Students should ask themselves:
What does my instructor expect me to do?
Do I understand what I need to do?
What are the questions I need to answer?
What do I need to know about the topic?
Should I ask my instructor for clarification?
Stage 2. Information seeking strategies
Students should be able to:
Determine all possible sources. For example, make a list of all possible sources and select the best ones.
Select the best source
Students should ask themselves:
Where can I start to look for information?
Who can I reach out for information
What are the best source to use?
Stage 3. Location and Access – Students should be able to:
Locate sources
Identify the information needed
Locate sources and find information within the text
Students should also ask themselves:
Where can I find these resources?
How do I search to get to them?
Where do I find the information in the source?
Stage 4. Use of information
It was also mentioned that students should engage to read and extract relevant information. For example: Use skimming and scanning to find information that addresses their topics. Furthermore, students also should ask themselves:
What type of information did they find?
Is it credible and fact-based?
Is the information reliable?
